Friends of St. Matthew’s House:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of St. Matthew’s House, I want to share with you information about some important changes related to the leadership team of our organization.

The most substantial, and difficult, change is that Steve Leighfield is no longer with our organization. We thank Steve for his significant contributions to St. Matthew’s House over the past five years.

As an interim measure, Karen Randell and Angela Dauda, both program managers, will assume the overall management of the organization, now as co-executive directors. They will report directly to me and the Board of Directors and have our full support. The Board will be taking steps to recruit a new Executive Director who will lead St. Matthew’s House into its next chapter in fulfilling our mission of being a place of hope and assistance to Hamiltonians in need.

The Board has conscientiously made these changes as part of our ongoing discernment of a revitalized vision for St. Matthew’s House after the loss of our largest program, Early Childhood Integration Support Services. Further restructuring will be considered as we seek to address our new financial and organizational reality and to better align St. Matthew’s House with local community needs.

We appreciate your continued and generous support of the programs and good works that St. Matthew’s House provides.

2017 CPA Ontario Tax Preparation Assistance program

Personal tax preparation service is available at no charge to individuals:

  • Without dependants with a gross household income of less than $30,000
  • With dependants, including a spouse or equivalent, with a gross household income of less than $40,000

Volunteers do not prepare complex returns, such as returns for individuals who:

  • Have self-employment income
  • Have business or rental income and expenses
  • Have capital gains or losses
  • Have employment expenses
  • Have interest income greater than $1,000
  • File for bankruptcy
  • Are deceased within the year

  2. A copy of completed 2015 income tax return and 2015 Notice of Assessment
  3. Social Insurance Number for you and your spouse/common-law partner
  4. List of dependants and birth dates (day, month, year). Social Insurance Number for each dependant (if available)
  5. Details of spouse’s income and dependant’s income
  6. Date of marriage or separation (if in 2016)
  7. Details of any alimony and maintenance payments received or paid
  8. If a new immigrant, date of arrival in Canada
  9. If first time buyer, details of home purchase
  10. New reporting for 2016: If you sold a principal residence and have no capital gain because you are eligible for the full exemption, the following information on the sale is required: the year of acquisition, the sale price or amount you received for the property and the description/address of the property
  11. All receipts of income

Coldest Night of the Year 2016

It’s Cold out there.

On Saturday, February 20th, St. Matthew’s House and Mission Services are hosting the Coldest Night of the Year, a 2, 5 & 10 km winter walk hosted in 80+ cities across Canada in support of our work here in Hamilton with the hungry, homeless, and hurting.

  • GOAL: With your help, our goal is to raise $50,000 by February 20th, 2016!
  • HOW: To accomplish our goal, we’re looking for 20 team captains (of all shapes, sizes and ages) who will recruit 7-8 friends to their team, with a goal of raising $2000 per team. Of course, we’re also looking for a whole pile of walkers to join each of our teams and help us raise the funds.

Thanks to the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we are happy to announce that our highly anticipated interior renovation for our food bank will begin on June 25, 2015.

Starting on Monday, June 22, 2015, we’ll be relocating our Barton Street food bank and extending the service at our Roxborough food bank at the St. Helen’s Centre for the duration of the renovation.

On February 21, 2015, St. Matthew’s House along with 80+ communities across Canada will host an event called “Coldest Night of the Year”.  This is a a fantastic, fun, family-friendly walking fundraiser that raises money for the hungry, homeless and hurting in our local community.


Join us on Feb. 21 and experience this great event with all the other caring Canadians around the country for a 2, 5, or 10 km walk right at the heart of our city!

New Tax Credit to Benefit Farmers and Communities

This morning the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Jeff Leal, MPP announced a new Food Donation Tax Credit for Farmers at Hamtilon Food Share.

This new tax credit is helping put nutritious, fresh, locally grown food on the plates of those who need it most.

The Food Donation Tax Credit for Farmers — the only one of its kind in Canada — is giving farmers a tax credit valued at 25 per cent of the fair market value of the agricultural products they donate to community food programs, including food banks and student nutrition programs.
The tax credit is a part of the Ontario government’s local food strategy and Local Food Act, 2013 to promote the good things that are grown and harvested across the province.

“Hamilton Food Share has focused on increasing the amount of fresh product distributed to local emergency food programs as the thousands of people who visit a food bank do not have access to fresh food on an ongoing basis. We remain deeply committed to food security and we believe the new tax credit for farm donations will help us forge new partnerships within the agricultural sector in our community.”

Operation Backpack 2014 a great success

On August 28, employees of ArcelorMittal Hamilton East and other groups helped assembled 600 backpacks for inner-city kids in Hamilton.

St. Matthew’s House would like to thank ArcelorMittal Hamilton East, Woman of Steel, United Steelworkers Local 4752, Hamilton Specialty Bar, GIC Financial, Golden Horseshoe Credit Union, United Steelworkers Area Council 5328, Timmerman Industries, and many friends and staff of ArcelorMittal Hamilton East for their generous donation as well as voluntarism.

We are truly grateful for the time and money spent to make this a complete success.

Operation Backpack 2014

Operation Backpack 2014


Employees of ArcelorMittal Hamilton East are once again helping their community by purchasing backpacks for inner-city children.

ArcelorMittal Hamilton East, it’s employees and local union groups, have been raising funds all summer to purchase backpacks to help low income families support their children back to school.

Operation Backpack is a back-to-school program for inner-city kids in Hamilton, where otherwise they might not have the opportunity to receive essential supplies for school due to family financial restraints.  This year, they are planning to prep 650 backpacks for the kids that we serve at St. Matthew’s House.  Each backpack will be filled with school supplies needed for each child.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for children going to school for the first time or returning to school to have the basic equipment to succeed. Every child should have the tools necessary to do their best so that they can achieve their goals for learning.” said Steve Leighfield, Executive Director, St. Matthew’s House.

On Thursday, August 28, 2014, ArcelorMittal Hamilton East staff, friends and families will be assembling the backpacks from 10am to 11am at their mill located on 690 Strathearne Avenue North. St. Matthew’s House is the chosen agency to help distribute those packs to children in need.

St. Matthew’s House will be distributing backpacks throughout our programs.  Also, we will be giving some to our neighbouring schools: Cathy Wever Elementary School and St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School.
