This August St. Matthew’s House is launching its inaugural “Hunger Does NOT Take Vacation” campaign and we need help collecting non-perishable food items for those in need in Hamilton.

Summer is a busy time of year for food banks, even if it’s not the first season that comes to mind. Since the beginning of June St. Matthew’s House has served 4,245 people, including 1,494 children at its food banks.

Please consider holding a food drive sometime in the month of August. It can run for a weekend, a week or the whole month…it’s up to you! Spread the word with your family, friends, co-workers and neighbours. Once you’ve collected the food give us a call and we’ll pick it up! Your gesture will mean the world to the families we serve.

If you’re going to be away this month but you still want to get involved, consider making a donation to our food bank. Your gift will support a family, child, individual or senior in need.  You can make an online donation, send a cheque to 414 Barton St E, or call 905-523-5546 ext. 228.

Thank you for taking time to consider this request. Your support would be invaluable to those in need in our community!

From all the staff at St. Matthew’s House, we hope you enjoy what’s left of summer.

New Board Chair for St. Matthew’s House

On September 23rd, 2016, posted in: News by

Outgoing St. Matthew’s House Chair, Glenna E. Swing and incoming Chair, Michael A. Rehill.

After three years Glenna Swing has completed her term as St. Matthew’s House Board Chair.

In the past three years Swing has worked tirelessly to ensure that SMH is the voice of the less fortunate in our community.

“I am always amazed at the generous hearts in our city. The need is so big, so real,” says Swing.

Swing will continue to support SMH as the Past Chair under the direction of the new Board Chair, Michael Rehill.

Rehill is a retired Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board principal, as well as a retired Major in the Canadian Armed Forces. Rehill served for 40 years and was the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry when he retired earlier this year.

Rehill joined SMH in 2012 but he is no stranger to poverty in Hamilton. He spent much of his career working with students in inner-city schools. During that time he was selected to Co-Chair the Hamilton Board of Education’s Anti-Poverty steering committee. He was also involved in the Aboriginal Stay-in-School Initiative and Vice-Chair of the Hamilton Aboriginal Education Committee.

“I am honoured and excited to be elected Chair of SMH. Our organization has been helping people and providing hope for over 50 years in downtown Hamilton. Our vision is a community of caring and collaboration,” says Rehill.

Rehill continues to be a pillar in our community serving as Chair of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires (Hamilton), Past Chair of Alternatives for Youth Hamilton and Past Chair of the St. John Ambulance Hamilton.
